RUG STYLES
There are two main types of construction used to
produce floor rugs and wall hangings - hand made rugs and machine made
rugs.
HAND MADE
Hand made rugs include: hand knotted, hand tufted
and kilim rugs. From the above, hand knotted rugs are the most valuable
and durable as its process of weaving involves one person actually
spinning the yarn and knotting each rug one yarn at a time.
MACHINE MADE
Machine made rugs are becoming more popular than
ever. It’s an affordable way of enjoying the designs of hand made
masterpieces. Generally they are available in a large selection of sizes
with matching runners and door mats.
YARN TYPES
The quality of rugs will depend on the type of
fibre(s) used on the pile as well as the process of construction. The
two main types of yarns are synthetic yarns and natural yarns.
NATURAL YARNS
Wool yarn is the most well known fibre used in
rug production. It has been used for hundreds of years and for good
reason. It is naturally hard wearing, with great resilience. The actual
shape of the yarn has soil hiding properties that make it appear cleaner
than synthetic rugs. Noted for luxury and softness, wool has high bulk.
Silk is often used to add accent colours to high
end wool rugs or it can be used to make an entire rug. Silk has a very
soft, luxurious feel to it.
SYNTHETIC YARNS
Polypropylene is a single process
yarn, which is made up with the colour already incorporated in the
fibre. It is much harder for this yarn to be stained.
Heat set polypropylene is polypropylene yarn that
is twisted and then treated with heat to stay twisted and mimic the
natural look of wool yarn. It offers exceptional colour fastness and
wear properties.
Acrylic is a soil and wear resistant yarn. It is
easy to clean and it has an unlimited variety of brilliant colours. Most
acrylic rugs are cottony soft and have beautiful textures.
